The residency facilities are in a historic tanning neighborhood about 35 minutes from the town center. Every morning, I wake to the sounds of the tanneries starting up (ok, I’m up before them…!). Most work with doors open, so walking around I can peek in.

Last week I arrived in Himeji, Japan for a 3-month leather artist residency. It is strange to be out of my workshop, and without the pressures of client work and daily life with two small children. But, here I am. I will use this space to share images of what I see. This is a tender time, one of hope and loss.
